From Savage World to Super7: Thundercats and the Costly Revival of 'Hemanized' Toys
Does anyone recall Funko's ill-fated foray into the “Hemanization” trend? Dubbed Savage World, it reimagined popular franchises like Street Fighter, Thundercats, Conan (whose second wave was infamously scrapped), and a slew of DC Comics characters in the bulky, retro style of 1980s action figures. Despite a heavy push from influencers, the line fizzled out quickly, leaving the experiment as little more than a footnote in toy history.
Now, Super7 seems determined to resurrect this forgotten niche with their new “vintage” Thundercats figures—offering a similar aesthetic but at a significantly higher price point than the doomed Savage World line. Whether collectors will bite this time remains to be seen, but the shadow of Funko’s crash-and-burn looms large.
